How To Choose A Business Partner

When my business partner and very cool friend asked me to be the first guest on her podcast (a long-time dream of hers), I was surprised, excited and nervous.

The fact is, though, Evy has always seen the best in me.

I get a lot of DMs, and a lot of them ask for advice on how to pick a business partner. What contract did I draw up 😂 And I mean, don’t we all want someone to share the journey with – someone who gets it.

So I thought I might share a couple of never-revealed criteria.

There are a certain number of times a year that business feels like, a lot. And we talk about this – it is hard. But there are more times a year that you feel like business is this beautiful energy that gives you energy, that reminds you about being on a journey that grows, so you can do more cool stuff that you enjoy.

You need to find someone who feels the same way. Find a person who could talk

under concrete about business (in particular, about things you are missing yourself). The passion + the work ethic + the missing piece = the dream partner. Even the days when the only message from Evy is a hilarious business related gif. It is enough.

A lot of people go into partnership wondering how can this person help me. My advice is to flip it. If you can trust this person, and they prove it to you – how can you power down on areas that can help them.

There has to be a give and take, and you have to join a partnership with the ability and desire to help your partner completely smash every goal.

Finally, when Evelyn and I first started together, we started so slowly. We were both so nervous to work together and, based on previous experiences, we had been burned pretty badly. It’s pretty crazy, but I was very close to passing by the opportunity to work with her – it felt like too much of a risk letting anyone close again after ‘last time’. But I will forever be thankful I did.

I remember constantly being surprised by her – answering my message, creating a digital product together, her pitching the concept of Secret Weapon and being like should we do this. I kept waiting for things to break, but I think taking it slow is a huge ingredient of success.
