Why Etsy Sellers Need an Email List: The Backup Nest That Changed Everything:

When I first landed on Etsy, I honestly thought I’d found home.
Digital products were such a wild contrast to working 1-on-1 with design clients. After years of deadlines, revisions, and client expectations, Etsy felt like freedom. And for almost eight years, it became the primary (and only) income for
our little family.
Being able to create something on my own terms and then sell it again and again? That was the biggest gift. It completely reshaped the way I think about business, creativity, and earning online.
And to this day, I still believe Etsy is the best place to start selling digital products.
But… over time I realized something important.
I was living in a beautiful house that I didn’t actually own.
Because as magical as Etsy is, it’s still borrowed land. If the algorithm shifted, if fees changed, if search updates buried my listings -my entire income tilted with it. My business felt secure… until it didn’t.
That’s when I decided to build a second nest.
Not to replace Etsy. Not to “leave the platform.” But to build something alongside it - something that belonged solely to me and couldn’t be taken away with an update or a policy change.
That “something”? My email list.
I started small - collecting subscribers one by one, gently moving my favorite buyers off-platform and into a cosy corner of the internet where I could talk to them directly.
And here’s the wonderful part: Some of my very first subscribers still read my emails to this day (if that’s you, hi 👋).
Through every software shift, every new shop, every pivot…the one thread that stayed with me was my list that's why i believe Etsy sellers need a email list.
That backup nest became my safety net. And over time, it became my launchpad.
Three Things Building My List Gave Me and Why Etsy Sellers Need an email list
1. Stability
When Etsy’s traffic dipped, my business didn’t disappear with it.I could email my audience directly, make sales, and keep cash flow healthy — without relying on anyone else’s algorithm.
2. Product Ideas
This one surprised me, but it ended up becoming gold.My subscribers write back. They ask for things. They tell me what they’re struggling with. Some of my strongest, most successful products were born from those “Hey Jessa, do you have a template for…” messages.
3. Growth
My list became the bridge between my Etsy shop and what came next:off-platform digital products, programs, bundles, and offers that belonged 100% to me.
Here’s the truth…
You don’t need to leave Etsy just because it’s a platform. You should use its incredible traffic as your unfair advantage.
Just make sure you’re building something alongside it - something that gives you options for the future.
Your email list is how you fortify your business. It’s the nest that can hold your next big idea… and the one thing no algorithm can take from you.
