Why Minimalist Designs Sell Better on Etsy (Even When Beautiful Ones Don't!)

Confession: I'm a maximalist.

Give me colour, detail, stuff everywhere. My dream designs are LOUD.

So it used to drive me mad that in my Etsy banner shop, my elaborate, detailed, gorgeous designs sat unsold...

...while a simple pink background with some text sold again and again and again.

It took me ages to work out why.

Why Do Minimalist Designs Sell on Etsy?

Here's the theory that changed how I design.

Picture a shopper. She has something hyper-specific in her head - let's say a giraffe wearing a party hat with a penguin.

She searches Etsy.

That exact thing doesn't exist.

So what does she buy?

Not somebody ELSE'S elaborate vision, because it clashes with the one

in her head.

She buys something minimal. Neutral. Clean.

Because it doesn't fight with her imagination.

That's one reason minimalist designs can work so well on Etsy, especially in niches like wedding stationery, invitations and editable templates.

The bride who couldn't find her dream invitation buys the simple one and adds her own giraffe on the day. 🦒

What If Your Etsy Designs Aren't Selling?

Ask yourself:

Is my design so specific that it's clashing with what buyers imagine?

Sometimes, the answer isn't adding more detail.

It's taking some away.

Strip it back.

Neutral colours.

Simple layouts.

Broad appeal.

ONE exception: Junk journals and clipart!

Those niches often thrive on detail, personality and beautiful maximalist designs. Stay extra over there. 🎀

For everyone else, remember:

Let the buyer's imagination do the decorating.

Big love,

P.S. Want to Learn What Actually Sells on Etsy?

Learning what actually sells (versus what we love making) is half of design!
